The Maypole goes up !!!

The Maypole has arrived and was erected on the afternoon of 30th April 2016.
In days gone by, this tree was put up by "man-power"
in an intricate operation, taking the coordinated efforts  of many men.

Today, a motorized "grappler" does the job.

Higher and higher goes the top!
More and more into the vertical position.

until, at last, it has reached the angle of the pendulum.

The tree comes to rest in a 75 cm deep hole in a concrete pedestal
and is  fastened with wedges.

It used to take 20 to 30 men,
now these three lads and a motorized grappler
 accomplished the job.

Last shot of Winter

This is the  "10th October Place" in Bleiburg
day before yesterday.
Today there is not a flake left and the temperature is in the mid 20s.
Isn't this crazy ?  But wonderful !!

I wish it were so !

When I look around Europe and, in fact, at the rest of the world I am reminded of one of the sayings of Baha' U' Llah.

THE WORLD IS BUT ONE COUNTRY AND MANKIND ITS CITIZENS !

Although this is a verity, we don't seem to behave like this.

Snow, more snow and then some more snow

I cannot remember a single day last Winter with as much snow fall as there is today.

and it isn't over yet...

This is Spring ???

My last postings were all about Spring and how beautiful everything was.
The trees and bushes in full bloom, The sun shining from cloudless skies, and ...  and what ?!!
Right now it is snowing like crazy. Last night and early this morning the temperature was -8 C.
This is MINUS 8 degrees Celsius.
Water freezes at 0 degrees  Celsius..
What, in hell, is happening here ?
Has Nature gone as crazy as the voters of this country ?
Austrian Voters? Crazy?
You had better believe it. They voted for a position, similar to the Governor General in Canada.
A person, one step above the Parliament, but with little power.
This person, the Bundespräsident ( President of the Federation ) may advise, persuade, within the country, and represent the Country outside, on the international level.
Under specific circumstances he may also dissolve Government.
So, he is not that powerless after all. Is he ?
This man, who, after a final run-off election, may become the "Governor General" of Austria belongs to the FPÖ,
the "Freedom Party of Austria."
A very Right Wing political  party.
"Austria and Austrians above all" ( does this sound a little like "Deutschland über Alles"?
To Hell with the Asylum seekers.
Although he does not actually say it, he would gladly send them all back to where-ever they had come from,  irrespective of their fate.

Since he did not receive 51  but only 37%  of the votes, a run-off election is needed with the second in the popular vote count.
Judging by the mood in the country, I fear that he may win this run-off.

His name is Norbert Hofer and among other affiliations he belongs to the "Burschenschaft ( Boys Club ) Marko-Germania zu Pinkafeld", whose motto is: "Ehre, Freiheit und Vaterland"  ("Honour, Freedom and Fatherland" )
The use of this terminology scares me: The Regime which dictated life in Austria between 1938 and 1945 loved and used those words freely: On their dagger , which I, as a  10 year old was allowed to carry, the inscription on the blade read:  "Blut und Ehre" (Blood and Honour )
Their slogans ran the gamut of "Freedom, Liberty and  Bread" right up to the inscription above the Concentration Camp of Dachau: "Labour liberates". (Arbeit macht frei)

While words like Honour, Freedom, Fatherland, Peace, Bread, are surely beautiful words, in recent history they were excessively used by Fascist Governments and, in my mind at least, when used in political propaganda,  they carry a very right wing connotation.
( By the way, I am far from the only one with these thoughts and worries about Mr. Hofer.)

Judging by the attached pictures and the political happenings one might assume that the "ice time" has returned.

Since I took these pictures, lots more snow has fallen.

The Door to Spring

A few days ago I drove to the Klopeiner See ( Klopein Lake ).
On my way there I saw, with astonishment, in the middle of a meadow, a door!
At first I thought: "This door leads to nowhere"
Then I thought again and realized that this door leads to Spring.
So here it is: "Open the Door to Springtime."

"The" Hotel

The rumor that we stayed in the "Royal Suite" in this Hotel is without  factual foundation.
We merely felt compelled to take an image of this wonderful Rococo Facade in order to preserve it for posterity.

A "Hotel" in Nakuru, Kenya is actually a Pub.

The Queen and I

More years ago than I care to count, accompanied by two friends,  I was on my first Photo-Safari in Kenya.
Naturally we visited the "Treetops Hotel" in the Abadare Mountains and were captivated by the romance of having to climb a ladder to reach our rooms in the upper level of this peculiar structure.
After having had dinner in the very narrow dining room
(that's another story) we gathered on the roof deck and observed the goings-on of Elephants, Warthogs and various Monkeys below.
I got to chat with the manager of this famous hotel. He asked me my room identification and after I told him, he informed me with a smile that this was the very room occupied on the 5th day of February 1952 (some 30 years earlier) by "Princess Elizabeth of the House of Windsor" and her husband Prince Phillip.
The Princess' father, King George VI,  died in London during that night and therefore, it is said, that the Lady climbed the ladder of the Treetops as a Princess,  had fun during that day and night and then, in accordance with the British Law of Succession, descended via that same ladder the next morning as the Queen.

What's more, I can therefore claim that I shared a bedroom with the Queen of England. (not at the same time )

Arriving at the parking area, one is accompanied by an armed guard from the vehicle to the foot of the ladder, where the warning is posted:
"Do not leave this building without the protection of an armed guard."
( a warning, I consider a bit of hype )

has been back to East- and southern Africa
many times, but still remembers his first Safari
and the Treetops with special fondness.

The PIGEONS

Where have all the pigeons gone ?
long time passing.
Where have all the pigeons gone ?
long time ago !
Where have all the pigeons gone ?
Old Man has poisoned everyone!
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn.
Peter, Paul and Mary
Where have all the flowers gone ?

Many years ago, many pigeons roosted on this cross
atop the roof of the local church!

Star bursts

Three "Novas" in the Star system "Alpha Centauri" exploding.

or...maybe a summer dandylion, taken with a 105mm close up lens.

Oh Yeah.. No doubt.... that's gotta be a dandylion.

Up to "Klipitzthörl

Through the Lavanttal ( the Valley of the Lavant )
and up to the Village of Klipitzthörl
(the Little Door of the Klippitz )
at an elevation of 2000 meters.
The trip along a well maintained road, partially asphalt and partially gravel, offers one stunning view after the other.
I regret that I can only show you a  very few of the fotos I took. Anyway a Foto cannot compare to the real thing.

Please click on the image for a larger view.

Farms, hewn out of dense forest, with nary a level square foot
and the nearest neighbour miles away.

A view into the valley and the Village of Preims.

An entire alpine meadow covered with crocuses.

Still some snow, stubbornly hanging around the highest regions.

Two famous Sculptors

I would like to introduce to you two sculptors, both exceedingly famous, working in completely different styles and both honoured manyfold.

Please note that the following is a very personal opinion of “Bertstravels” who has no academic qualification whatever, but who, through deep interest in the arts, has developed a sense of “like and like-not-so-much” all of his own.

Hans Peter Profunser was borne in 1956 in the town of Lienz in the Province of East Tirol.

He lives in an out-of-the-way community of Oberberg in the Valley of the River Drau.
His honours and laudatios are many, his popular acceptance intense.

Here are only two of his creations which decorate both ends of the bridge over the river Drau, very near my home.

"Die Getriebenen" ( 'The Hunted'  or  'The Driven')

Three human figures, bent forward, straining,
running in a flowing motion,
so natural that one might almost detect a movement.

************************

"Begegnung"    ( ' Meeting' )

Five human figures, arms reaching for each other,
in a boat, split in two,
Two Nations, two Peoples meeting, desiring
Mutual Understanding! Peace!

**************************

Bruno Gironcoli: Died in 2010 at age 74.
He had become one of Austrias  most famous
and highly prized and priced sculptors.
Among many other Prizes and Awards
he received the " Grand Austrian State Prize"

Gironcoli's work, compared to Profunser, seems staid, motionless, sometimes threatening

"Sacophargus"
decorated with two Swastikas, (one side-reversed)
Pretentious, blocky, without movement or life,
seeming to deny entrance to the Museum Liaunig.
Do the Swastikas indicate the death of the System which used this sign as its emblem ?
But then, one would bury them inside and not use them as a decoration  of the coffin.
(I truly do not understand it)

"Bed"

I dare not offer an opinion: If asked I would have to say that Gironcoli falls into my category of "Like-not-so-much". His Art is clearly beyond my understanding.
as is a quote attributed to him by the "Independent" on Tuesday, 16th March 2010:

When asked to define what motivated him, Gironcoli explained:
"The sculptor has no employer; He has to go beyond this paralysing situation; the model and the vacuum of the model become desire and unconsciousness".

The Chasm and the church of TRÖGERN !

I know that I have visited the "Trögerner Klamm" ( the Chasm of Trögern ) during Summer of last year.
The area there is so beautiful that I simply had to go again. This time I also took the side road leading up to the church of Trögern. Very very few people live there. For miles around there are probably a dozen persons, if that many.
The church opens only once in a while. A small grave yard surrounds it with mostly Slovenian names on the grave stones.
I would like to know why anybody went to the trouble to erect such an edifice in such lonesome countryside. Who knows what pressure was put on the lonely farmers of this area.
The only person I met up there surmised that it might have been a "solemn promise"such as:
"Dear Lord, if you let my wife recover from her sickness, I shall build a church up there, close to heaven."
A guess, just as good as any other.

On  the way up to the Chasm of Trögern,
gently rolling hills covered by Spring Green
and blooming trees accompany you  all the way.

How many shades of Green ?

The slightly wider than one lane road
snakes along the rushing brook.

In the somewhat hazy distance the highest mountain of the Karawanken chain
the "Hoch Obir" reaches to the clouds.

At the end of a long winding road
we reach the little church of Trögern.

unfortunately, but understandably, the church was locked
so we must be satisfied with those shots of the outside.
